Why daily showering after the age of 65 can do more harm than good.
For decades, showering daily was considered a sign of good hygiene. Many people grow up believing that bathing daily is essential for cleanliness and health. But after the age of 65, this long-standing habit may no longer be as beneficial as once thought. In fact, showering daily may unknowingly be doing more harm than good for many older adults.
Aging skin is different
As we age, our skin naturally changes. From the age of 60 onwards, it becomes thinner, drier and more sensitive. The sebaceous glands produce less natural moisture, and the protective barrier that fights bacteria and keeps the skin hydrated weakens over time. Daily showering – especially with hot water and regular soap – can strip away what little natural skin oil remains.
This often leads to dry skin, itching, irritation, and even small, easily misplaced cracks. These small skin lesions can create entry points for infections that are harder for older people's bodies to fight off.
Excessive washing disrupts the healthy bacteria.
